Pitta

is comprised of the elements fire and water, representing transformation. It is naturally oily, sharp, hot, light, and spreading, and it is balanced by dry, soft, cool, heavy, and contained qualities. The qualities of pitta combine to allow for digestion and metabolism, sensory perception, and transformation. The term pitta is derived from the root word tapas, which means “to heat” or “to glow.”

QUALITIES hot, intense, light, oily, sharp, fluid, soft, and mobile

SEASON summer

TIME OF DAY 10am-2pm | 10pm-2am

PHYSICAL generally have an average build, well-developed musculature, proportionate, and balanced. Pittas tend to have a red, flushed, glowing complexion, with warm, moist skin and prone to rashes, acne, and other inflamed conditions. Hair is generally fine and soft and tends to gray or bald early. Pittas gain or lose weight easily, have good appetites and good digestive systems. Pittas prefer cold climates due to their hot nature.

STORED IN THE BODY Pitta is in charge of all transformations in the body and mind including the digestion of food and information. It is the force of metabolic activity in the body associated with the endocrine function, hormone levels, digestion, body temperature, visual perception, hunger, thirst, and skin quality. Resides in the brain, liver, spleen, gallbladder, small intestine (its primary site), endocrine glands, skin, eyes, blood, and sweat.

IMBALANCE increase in pitta: burning pain, heat in the body, inflammation, fever, thirst, foul smell, aversion to heat, redness, acne, hyperacidity, heartburn, profuse sweating, impatience, judgmental, angry, insomnia, frustration, critical and controlling. Symptoms are worse in hot and humid weather at mid-day and in the middle of the night. Decrease in pitta: poor digestion, feelings of coldness, lack of vigor, stiffness, and loss of skin luster. Those with high levels of Pitta can digest just about anything but if there is excess Pitta, they may suffer from excess body heat, indigestion and skin rashes.

BALANCE strong, organized, ambitious, passionate, good will, warmth, and good leaders. They tend to be dedicated to self-development and have good self-discipline. To support healthy pitta, incorporate balancing influences that are relaxing and calming including yoga, meditation, and being around water, followed by time in nature to ground and maintain a healthy and consistent daily routine and take plenty of rest.
